Getting Stock Quotation within a Spreadsheet

I recently discovered that one can get stock quotation of any US based stock from within a spreadsheet and it is very simple. One can do it by following these two steps.

1) First make sure that the smart tags are turned on. One can go to Tools and then select the Auto Correct Option. There click on smart tags and then select label data with smart tags.

2) Then enter the stock symbol in capital letters. Let's say we want data for Yahoo. Then enter the symbol YHOO in an empty cell. Then you can see the smart tag to the right of the cell. Click 0n that select Insert Refreshable Stock Price. You can either get the stock quotations in the sheet itself (after manually typing the address of a cell) or in a new sheet.

Of course you need an internet connection for this.

Hopefully, Microsoft will similarly provide stock quotation for Indian stocks oneday.

A somewhat cumbersome woraround for the Indian stocks is to create a portfolio (that appears as a table) on Y!Finance, MoneyControl etc. We can use the web-query import tool to get the stock prices to the spreadsheet

I just found that there are two options to get refreshable stock prices for Indian stocks:

• Create your own smart tag which can recognize Indian symbols (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/marketplace/EY010504821033.aspx).
• Open a new excel file and follow the following steps
a) Go to – Data>Import external data>New Web Query
b) New Web Query pop-up window will appear
c) In the address bar put the address of the website from where you need to fetch the data (http://content.icicidirect.com/market/DailySharePrices.asp?Exchange=NSE&startname=A)
d) Click GO
e) Lot of arrows will appear on the website data box, tick one you want
f) Click > Import
g) Import data window will appear, you can choose to put these data into the same sheet or otherwise.
h) Click on > Properties
i) External data range properties pop-up will appear
j) You can select “refresh data on file open

This way you can get refreshable stock data in excel.
